"A mask becomes dangerous when it disconnects from the self it was meant to express..."
Life requires that we wear different versions of ourselves. Some roles we choose consciously. Others we slip into without noticing. The way we speak, soften, perform, protect, impress, or hold back changes depending on who is in front of us and what the moment seems to require. Sometimes it is how we survive a room. Sometimes it is how we honour a relationship. Sometimes it is simply how human beings move through the expectations beneath everyday life. “Smoke & Mirrors” reminds me of the danger that begins when the performance drifts too far from the person. When the version of ourselves that gets rewarded becomes easier to maintain than the truth beneath it. When being impressive starts to feel safer than being honest. There is something unsettling about that mirror. From the inside, we may feel like one consistent self. But from the outside, others may see versions of us we barely recognise. And sometimes those closest to us become the ones who reveal the gap between who we believe we are and how we are actually showing up. Beneath the show is not only the fear of being exposed. There is also the longing to be seen clearly. To know that someone can look past the smoke and mirrors, past the role we have learned to play, and still recognise the person underneath.
